Event Description

The What: This is a day to experience democratic education while learning about your community’s involvement in food justice. Participate in learning how to engage in democratic process and popular education, and experience local poetry, music, and art!

The Who: The keynote speaker will be Dr. Nandini Gunewardena, food justice author, advocate, and educator. With her will be WWU alumni, faculty, and students, Community to Community, the Puget Sound Fishing Alliance, and many more local organizations! The event is sponsored by WWU’s Human Services and Rehabilitation Counseling Dept. in Woodring. 

The When: Saturday, May 17th, 9am-4:30pm.

The Where: Bellingham Technical College - Multipurpose Room and Cafeteria.

The Why: The end of the symposium will be an opportunity to develop the goals and structure of a new popular education center, in the tradition of the Highlander folk school of Tennessee.

The Extras: This event will be a potluck and be in an atmosphere of community with music and art. For the potluck please bring your own dish to share with food justice in mind, according to your last name:

A-G      bring    Main dish

H-M     bring    Finger foods

N-S      bring    Dessert

T-Z       bring    Salad

Really looking forward to this event! Community Food Co-op and Stand Up Whatcom will both be tabling during the lunch hour.
