Fruit tree pruning season is upon us! As you prune, remember to save scion wood for the Great Graft Gathering!
Bring your favorite Apple, Pear, Plum scion wood varieties from your neighborhood. Share with others and graft on root stock to start new trees!
People will be on hand to demonstrate commonly used grafting techniques. You then can select scion wood and rootstock and graft your own tree to take home! Dwarf apple, pear and plum rootstock will be available for a nominal fee. Different scion wood varieties will be available to share.
There is interest in Asian pears and heirloom apple and pear varieties, so please bring scions from any trees you may have.
Scion wood should be cut from a section of last year's vegetative growth, up to 12" or so long and about a pencil-width diameter. Seal the ends with paraffin or tree-seal, or place in a zip lock bag, with a moist paper towel and refrigerate. The idea is to keep the wood dormant and moist. until it is grafted. Labeling the variety is also important.
Please RSVP so we can have enough rootstock on hand. If you have a grafting knife or other supplies please bring them along.

Hi Heather, thanks for all your joyous comments. I will have 2 different types of apple rootstock, semi-dwarf and standard.
2 different pear, one that is good for Asian pears. We have a lot of plum suckers that we can dig up for stone fruit. I'm not sure what kind of root stock it is but it is all that I could find. Doug Bullock seemed to think they would be fine to graft on to. Burnt Ridge where I ordered these from didn't have any stone fruit rootstock. I think that I ordered about 40 all together.
I have been collecting a little here and a little there of a wide variety of scion wood. If everyone that comes brings what they can find that is unique we should have plenty. Yay it's going to be a party! Wish you could be here, but I'm sure you are having fun on Maui!

Hi Brian, Don will bring some scion for the workshop and volunteer as needed before or during. I'm thinking maybe 12 of each variety...Let me know if you want him to bring more. We have 3 apple variieties and 2 pears. If you will be having any other type of rootstock other than apple & pear will you let us know?

Hi Brian! So glad you are initiating this workshop!
I hope some of my fruit tree scions make it there as a gifting!
Raintree Nursery offers many bareroot rootstock choices for grafting.
Next year, if you order ahead, someone local could bring them back from the Seattle Flower Garden Show that they attend.
I'll be there in spirit!

Hi Brian-- I am RSVPing, and am excited for this workshop. I can probably bring winesap apple scions from a neighbor's tree that makes amazing apples. I would be interested in pear, apple, and plum rootstock if available. Also, I am interested in obtaining some cherry scions (to graft onto ornamental cherries) if someone has any. Thank you so much!
