Hi Cari,

I had asked for a contact for local beef and finally found one I could afford!  It is Third Thyme Farm out near Sumas.  Owners Ginny and Les Wagner are a sweet older couple who raise their own cows and have them butchered through a FDA-approved mobile butcher.  Their email is lesandginny@wildblue.net, phone 988-5805.  They had a lot of ground beef ($3.00/lb or $4.50/1.5 lb packages) but not a lot of steaks.

The other option I considered was Skiyou Ranch ).  This option would be good if I wanted more steaks, and I wanted to go in on a 1/4 beef with other people.   Here is an email from owner, Tarie Benson:

It is a much better way to save to buy your meat in a quarter. Not only are you getting the convenience of have a mini meat shop at your home you are also getting all your cuts for the same price. As you know that is a huge savings, for the 2011 season we are selling our organic beef for $4.50 a lb. This includes all fees, cut,  wrap, and delivery. I have other customers that have shared with friends and have worked out well. A quarter beef usually weights around 150 lbs. We really arent sure of exact some have been 175, 180. but, the majority are within the 150. In a quarter there are approximately 6 roasts, 26-28 steaks, and 45 packs of ground beef. All of these are considered standard  cuts. There are different ways you can custom cut. and it is totally up to you on how it is cut.

I went with the easier, cheaper option of just buying $100 worth of organic, local meat (mostly ground beef and Italian sausage).  Hope this helps!

Good morning to you! I look forward to meeting you and your family. It's fun to know that like-minded folks live right across the street from where we are moving to. We are starting to move in today. I'm noticing that our yard will need mowing real soon. We are trying to decide how we will manage the grass. We probably will buy a lawn mower, but don't have one yet. I've been considering buying a scythe and using that to mow. Here at inspiration Farm Brian Kirkvliet uses a scythe and last year he had a master scythe maker here to give a workshop on how to use it and care for it. It seems the ultimate tool for mowing in a post-carbon world. However right now we don't have one and it takes time to learn how to use one. Do you have a lawn mower? If you do, would you be willing to let us borrow/rent it until we get one?

Take care,
Angela

Hi Cari! I'm so glad you jumped on to Transition Whatcom. I can see by your photo that you must be a busy mom. I am wondering if you would join the Transition Birchwood group - this will help us stay in touch, and would be a great way for us to possibly meet, exchange ideas, veggies and fruit, and see what we can organize as the potentially largest food producing neighborhood in B'ham! Check the Groups tab - Transition Birchwood is there. Hope to meet you sometime soon!
P.S. We have an extra box of lovely Akane apples. Do you need/want apples?
