Event Description

Hi Folks,

Though this is outside Whatcom county, I think it could be a great opportunity for us to learn how to design our own communities, and live more sustainably.

Here's the lowdown:

Some folks have just purchased some land on the southern side of the Olympics, on the Satsop river, with the intention to create a community called Clearwater Sanctuary there. Huckleberry Leonard, the lead teacher for the course, has studied and taught with David Holmgren, Toby Hemmenway, Geoff Lawton, and others, and has been teaching permaculture since '98. His specialties include natural building and design, edible landscaping (30 years experience prior to permaculture) and all things botanical of the Pacific NW. More on him here.

This course is unique because it includes co-designing how the community will be created. Starting in January, the design that's created in this course will begin to be implemented. How cool is that?! A permaculture course that's actually based on a piece of land, and design that will actually be put into practice.

More details below.

Permaculture design course with Ginger & Huckleberry Leonard is a great choice!   I won't be able to attend, but sure hope some Whatcom - People of the Salish Sea are able to attend!

This is also the gateway to being involved in the community, so if you've ever wanted to learn about community, permaculture, sustainability, living off the land, or how to follow your dreams and live a magic life, come along and we'll have a great couple of weeks!

We still need some more participants for the course to fly, so please help spread the word!

Here's a letter of invitation:
Hello,

I would like to share with you a neat little project happening on the Olympic Peninsula. There is a small group of peoples working together to create a living model of an ideal common sense living pattern.  They recently formed a nonprofit agrarian community called Clear Water Sanctuary to accomplish this. Check out their mission statement:

Clear Waters Sanctuary (a Permaculture Collective) is a seedling community sharing an intention to co-create and demonstrate patterns for modern humans to live in harmony. The community design is based upon established permaculture principles in order to facilitate integration of the community into the natural ecosystem for the benefit for all. The community focus is how human beings can live a cooperative neo-agrarian life in balance and celebrate the gifts of the natural world which we are all apart. We utilize wisdom from the past and new ideas of the present to build an example for the future of how we can live in harmony with our environment. As a community we recognize that pristine water is the source of all life and its protection and restoration provides the foundation upon which we base our actions. Its purity and vibrancy will gauge the success of our human settlement. As a community we will encourage regional resiliency by promoting and supporting watershed cooperation. Our ability to befriend and build a resilient network with our larger watershed community will gauge the success of our human community.

They’re working together with a few other friends to host a Permaculture Design Course. We all know how important it is for this knowledge to reach the masses in order to save our collective selves! With climate change looming and ecological and economic catastrophes at hand, there has never been such an urgent need for positive solutions! PDCs are full of positive solutions that point the way for one and all to systematically design a sustainable life for family and friends, thus freeing ourselves from the dependency on a failing and flailing system. This in turn raises the critical mass, and increases our chances of not just survival, but a happy future for all.

I have been talking to the community members and they told me they intend to support the cause of local sustainability in multiple ways; encouraging movements such as Transition Towns, Watershed Regeneration and Permaculture Design, demonstrations and workshops to help people become more self-sufficient in their own homes, preparing educational materials, interns and apprenticeships, and teaching and hosting Permaculture Design Courses.  Permaculture Design is at the heart of their cooperative farm community, from everyday practice to community service.

This PDC is going to be loaded with really practical information and lots of hands-on opportunities to learn. Their calling it "Nourishing Body Hearth and Soil" because of their unique emphasis on a traditional nutrient-dense (Weston A Price) diet, Natural Building and the Soil/Food Web (no-till, mycology etc).

I ask your support in helping me spread this opportunity of education and connection to any and all whom you feel would appreciate it. I have attached a Flyer for you to check out. I encourage you to visit their website at clearwatersanctuary.org for more information on CWS and their vision. I invite you to forward this message, as well as the Flyer should you feel called. Thank you for your investment of thought into the matter.
