We could use a rooster --a Rhode Island Red or Wyandotte. So if any extras appear in anyone's flocks, let us know.

Welcome Ron and Cathy. Wow - 16 ducklings! I'm not interested in Muscovies but if anyone ends up with an extra one or two Khaki Campbells (or similar breed) I'd be interested. Over here ... 6 out of 7 eggs hatched and the new peeps are adorable! Rosie is being a Great Momma Hen, teaching them all how to scratch bedding into the feeder and water bowls! Now to figure out who's a hen and who's a rooster, as they grow. I always give them girlie names, in case one might be undecided. Have given away a rooster named Marilyn before... ;-}

Anyone interested in ducklings? Our muscovy female just hatched 16 babies a few days ago. She sat for 35 days! They are super cute and very active. We decided to raise our own after a couple of females got snatched by coyotes or eagles.

We will have extras, so are planning to sell some for a small amount. ($5)

We also have been raising chickens for a number of years so we have enjoyed reading the comments in the chicken club.

I have 7 x 7 ft pallets and a whole lot of used plywood from Restore. Is there anyone who could look these supplies over and help me plan and perhaps build a small coop for about 8 hens and one rooster? OR do you know of someone?
I am needing the help fairly soon and I am a member of 4th corner exchange and can pay in Life Dollars and cash. I have very few tools. In Gratitude, Jamie

Keep us posted Alicia that's so fun to read about. I have a hen who is broody lately as soon as I can get my coop built I will let her sit...........

What fun, Kate. My hen Rosie is sitting on seven eggs right now - hopefully fertilized by Henry, my year-old rooster - son of Christy's Rodney, so the Rodney legacy continues. Broody hens can sometimes die if they're in a mega-brood - from not eating or drinking, so you have to keep an eye on them. Think of them as extremely hormonal. The fluffing and popping are her version of scaring off enemies to her clutch.

Eggs should hatch after about 21 days. If they don't, give her a few more days to see, and then you'll need to check to be sure the eggs haven't rotted - and get her off the nest for her own health. If they don't hatch, you'll have to break her of the brood (a wire cage with no bedding for a week ought to do it - when their breasts are warm (from sitting on eggs, it stimulates their hormones to brood. So you want to cool them off!)

I give Rosie an enforced break every morning. it's okay for the eggs to be uncovered for 10-15 minutes as long as they're out of drafts. I pick her up and put her out onto the "porch" of my isolation coop, along with some feed . Water I just keep in the coop. I give her some regular wild bird seed in her pellets to tempt her - they LOVE that. She usually stretches, poops, eats a little, goes in for a drink and plop, back onto the nest. Saturday will be 21 days so we'll see...

Ahhh...one of my hens wants to have a child. She has decided to 'set', and set and set and set (on some eggs).

Unfortunately all our hens eggs are infertile- no boyfriend. I got four from the neighbors who have a rooster, too, and snuck them under her with four of the 'blanks'. Wonder if they will hatch... Do they get down and eat and drink? I never see her off the nest. She's all puffed up and makes funny popping noises!

Hey Krista here is a direct quote from my friend who has raised a lot of turkeys (and chickens) over the years...."What makes a chicken sick, kills a turkey quick." She doesn't recommend housing them together as turkeys apparently have weak immune systems....That being said we had them comingling when I was a kid...

Krista,
Do you do your own butchering or do you have someone you would recommend?
