Hi Everyone! I'm a graduate student at Huxley (WWU) and I'm working on a project for one of my classes that I need some help on. We will be measuring the metal content (copper, zinc, maybe other metals) in rain barrel water to see the amount of metals washing off of different types of roofs. We will also be testing various garden soil types to see how much of the metal sorbs (binds to) the soil and how much is left in the soil solution to get an idea of how much of the metal is bioavailable to plants, bacteria and fungi.

Here's where I need help: we need rain barrels to take water samples from and some soil samples from gardens as well. We would like to get information on your roofing type and if you have ever applied an anti-moss product to your roof. We will have a short quesionnaire for you to fill out about your roofing type and rain barrel to help us decide which barrels to sample.

Thanks in advance for your help!

hi Hanna...i am out in Ferndale and have rainbarrels and an asphalt roof, never treated with an anti-moss product. i would be happy to fill out the questionaire and have you sample my barrels, etc if you want to...
thanks, peggy borgens.
Hi Hannah,

I use all the rainwater from the roof that I can get. The trick is to keep the barrels empty and ready for the next rain. My chickens drink it and I use it for the greenhouse. I'd love to have you test it....

Hi Hannah,

I use roof collected rainwater for my greenhouse and to water the chickens. It's collected in a variety of plastic containers. I'd love to have it tested. Contact Merry 734-2561 Thanks
Hanna,
We've been collecting rainwater for a few years. You can test here. Steve Wilson, 671-3380
Rebecca,
While you're at it you might want to include septic tanks in your search. They used to be fairly inexpensive in relation to their size. I'm assuming a non-potable use for the water.

Today I am going to research galvanized, water holding containers -- 1000 gal.+ size.

For gardeners, it makes sense.

I am trying to avoid plastics.
Hi there!
I'd love someone to do a water sample and soil sample! I've been wanting this done for awhile!
We have 5 rain barrels attached to two buildings.
We have never used anti-moss product.
We have regular roofing material (is that helpful?)
I can be reached at 715.3039.
Thanks!
Susan

Hanna, let us know if you want a sample from our rainbarrels.
We have never applied anti-moss products and we have lots of garden soil.
Hi Hanna, Have a composition roof installed 2007. I use a diverter system. You are welcome to test water, soi, etc.

Hi Everyone! Thanks for all the interest in our project!
I have pulled together a survey to get the study started - please email me at winterh2@students.wwu.edu and I will email the questionnaire back to you.

Thanks for the help!
Hi Hannah,

Interested in water that collects off of a (plastic? ) corrugated roof? Alicia 715-1259
