Heather, good thoughts. You and FEMA give similar advice, but I noticed that FEMA doesn't mention what to do with the emergency honey bucket after the emergency is over.

Mmmm Celt you're letting the secret of the 'Secret Garden Booster' out of the bucket! :-)
Our urine is one way we can actually give nourishment to the earth through the nitrogen it contains.

Although for folks that may share land with wildlife like deer, the salt in the humane urine might attract them to your soils.
(I used to think it might help deter the deer, but dogs do that better than humans).
Olympic national parks is now recommending that the guys be sure to urinate off the trail soil onto a rock, to reduce the face to face contact between a wild male with horns and us hiking animals. (Due to a very aggressive male mountain goat being attracted to the salt along trails).
Its always good to have a stash of sawdust and a few specially labeled 5 gallon compost or honey buckets & lid available for special situations...and a spare toilet seat make the use easier.
In an urban or small acreage situation the full buckets can be composted sanitarily into a larger 50 gallon garbage can with lid & wheels and locked shut when full for about 2 years to finish compost process.... ...Remember each land & situation will be different and we each need to be sensitive to where to place the finished product eventually...I would not recommend placing it near annual or low growing edible crops.
This winter I'll get a humanure discussion going once I have a few interested folks. Until then, be sure to review the book "Humanure Handbook" by Joseph Jenkins.
(Celt hope you don't mind my having expanding on this human-nutrient topic)
Comfrey plant is a great plant to have within walking distance of your compost brew bucket and to use medicinally. I have experienced it Not being aggressive in a garden setting where their roots are Not disturbed. The challenge is to find a nitch for the comfrey where it has its own space with No root disturbance.....ah especially when there are other plants & grasses surrounding that it are competing. ...Choosing a site where you don't ever plan to dig in the future can be the challenge. The worst cases I've seen with the comfrey plant, are when new gardeners plant it, and then try to rototill to knock it back or remove it....as in what Evergreen College students did years ago...the tiller chopped the root up into small pieces and spread the comfrey root all around.
The bees love the blossoms and the compost tea nourishes fruiting & phosphorus loving plants like tomotoes. Thank you Celt. This was a wo…tag:transitionwhatcom.ning.com,2010-09-08:2723460:Comment:307942010-09-08T07:45:31.082ZCharles Kelmhttp://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/profile/Permie

Hi Angela, I suggest gathering seaweed some other time than the announced shellfish bans. The bans are usually due to red tide, that is high algae levels. I confess that I don't worry about the seaweed in small quantities.
As for manure, you might ask hobby horse owners if you can clean up their pile. They are generally quite happy to have someone make it vanish. Ask them what they feed the horse and where they get it.
Thank you, I'm glad you like the blog.

Do you have a recommendation on where to get seaweed locally? (or within Whatcom/Skagit/Whidbey region) I'm wondering about the level of pollution in bellingham bay waters, there have been shellfish bans due to toxins. I'd love to gather seaweed in a way that didn't harm the shore too.
I see you are suggesting the addition of topsoil or composted manure. Do you have any sources that you feel confident do not have the aminopyrolid herbicide? We have a new place and just got bunnies and hens for their manure (and eggs) but that will take a while to accumulate much manure. I'm wanting to turn lawn into garden over winter and think a layer of manure would be great.
Thanks for your informative blog. I always read it.
