Reclaiming our Heritage to the Wisdom of the Natural World at The Downtown Food Co-op's Community Connection Center

November 11, 2010 from 12pm to 2pm
In modern society's relentless march 'forward' in the name of progress, much of the wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors has been discarded as outdated and backwards. However, more people every day are realizing the magnitude of this mistake and are working to reclaim our heritage. Whapio is a long-time leader in this movement, and so she will share with us her insights and perspectives on her work, along with how to rediscover this knowledge through our own journeys.

The Age of Stupid at WWU, AW204

April 7, 2010 from 7pm to 8:30pm
Coming up next, THE AGE OF STUPID, the new four-year epic from McLibel director Franny Armstrong. Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars and it entirely convincing as a weary archivist, living alone and still in disbelief in the devastated world of 2055, looking at old news footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance? The folks who saw this recently at the Firehouse reported that this is an extremely powerful film- stunning. A discussion will follow…See More

Transition Whatcom's Great Unleashing at Bellingham High School

April 10, 2010 at 9am to April 11, 2010 at 4pm
Because of the inevitable problems we’ll experience as a result of energy issues, we’re going to be challenged profoundly in the ways we live. As a community, we have two choices: we can sit back and wait, or we can respond proactively and begin making real changes that will lead to a more resilient community. The GREAT UNLEASHING is an event that will engage Whatcom County in a collective and committed response, and will kick-off the process of creating a 10-20 year energy descent action…See More

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition?
I am a member of Students for Sustainable Food at Western. I just helped out with The Perennial Project. Our club bought three fruit trees and planted them!
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I think it has always been the time to bring communities together to support each other with food, clothing, pottery, houses etc. rather than rely on our government and corporate America whose interest is not in Bellingham. Transition is a great medium to bring people together for this cause.
Do you have particular interests, skills, talents or resources you would like to bring to Transition Whatcom?
I love to create functional pottery. I love vegan cooking and baking. I have experience cooking and baking for an inn and helping to cater a couple weddings. I just learned how to plant trees. I am willing and wanting to learn more!
In what neighborhood or part of the county do you reside?
On Indian St. close to WWU.

Thanks so much for the invite to yoga! I may or may not be able to make it this Sunday, because my mom needs some help that day. But if at all possible I will be there. Please keep me in the loop for future ones as well.

Hi Elena,
It was so great to meet you at the 350 Day planting event. I was really impressed with SSF for showing up and pitching in money to buy more fruit trees. I look forward to working with you guys on other great projects in the future. As I told Anthony, I hope your group will consider me an off-campus ally and call on me if you need my help or my Transition Whatcom connections.
