Our current dominant way of looking at the world ("worldview" or "ideology") is rooted in the economic system (capitalism) that has been around for at least 500 hundred years (dating back to late…Continue
"I sympathize with you Garrett, but I never think I am only writing to my immediate audience, when writing in a public forum - as your response to my post shows the point.
I briefly reviewed the book you suggested. It looks interesting. I…"
"Hi Garrett. Nice to see you. I am glad you are trying to grow intentionally. I wish more of us realized the necessity for this. This is an urgent task for all of us, individually and as a species. And it is best done collectively,…"
"Welcome Elliot. I also recently joined TW and will move to Bellingham in a few months. But already I am trying to "making it my own" by actively participating in it at least through discussions now and later through practical…"
Please do not feel obliged to respond as I know that as a longer-term member you are busy in your other activities and other boards. My responses are not necessarily directed to you but the larger audience and I would hope that…"
You make many good points. However, personally I am not ready to make capitalism / competition the whipping post onto which to direct all blame. I don't have time to write a long post, but I note that competition and…"
"I suppose we have to disagree on that point Walter. The basis of every nation state, i.e., the identifying factor of a genuine national experience and cohesion has been a unique local / national economy. During the mercantilism stage of…"
I understand the purpose of this group. However, the reason I wrote the article is that we should question the assumption that putting our resources into "local businesses" will be necessarily a better alternative because…"
"Behrouz, welcome to the Personal Finance workgroup and thanks for the essay. I see there have been 15 views and no comments. I think this is an indication that people are really busy harvesting and preserving at this time of year. …"
""Capturing seigniorage is a wonderful idea, but I find it unlikely to be put into practice until the nation-state is already toast. At that point there may be other wonderful ideas floating around."
On this point I agree with you Walter.…"
I am new to Transition. My aim is to increase interaction among members in all areas of sustainability encouraging collective action and experimentation with focus on planning and implementing a sustainable cooperative economic system using the scientific / experimental approach. Integrating the various areas of focus (e.g., transitions agriculture / construction / health and nutrition / energy / education / etc.) into a holistic sustainable lifestyle (economic system) is my short-term goal, with proof of concept by experimental example (through use of science and technology). I recognize integrating the growing army of poor and unemployed, and providing them an equitable sustainable lifestyle and survival alternative to the current failed economic system, a strategic goal and proof of success.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Prepare for and adapt to the changing world in an active and sustainable way before I and the likes of me go extinct. It could potentially be a great network to affect meaningful change for survival of our species / bringing back dignity to our lives.
Do you have particular interests, skills, talents or resources you would like to bring to Transition Whatcom?
A genuine generalist with much depth in a variety of specialties. A work in progress but I have been training myself for this period of time / history for over 30 years - fortunate to know the inevitable need for a sustainable change (i.e., evolution - do or die). Glad more and more people are forced to recognize this (nothing like mother nature forcing us to shape up or else!). I see nature forcing us to change in fundamental ways especially in regards to the dominant economic system (capitalism) - and all the related institutions. My approach is scientific and interdisciplinary (without private interests / money) - based on the notion that nature is all matter and all matter is interconnected. Necessity first (survival), possibilities second (science and technology offering the most objective means and the best hope), our will and intentions last (tempered with the realism of above / our times) are ingredients of change - at this point our will is lacking most. My interests / talents / skills therefore reflect more or less the above priorities as I have tried to live a dignified life aiming to offer the best I possibly can for the survival of the species that gives the biggest meaning / purpose to that life.
In what neighborhood or part of the county do you reside?
Currently in Vancouver B.C. moving to Bellingham in a few months.
Where did you hear about Transition Whatcom and how did you find our community network website?

Hi Behrouz, Re active neighborhoods, many folks on the 'southside' are sensitive to energy & food transition issues; however they may not all identify with transition work, since they have been doing it long before the book was written.
There are many neighborhoods in the B'ham area, most all of them connected by the level coast geography so getting around with bike or walk or bus is easy. The Birchwood & Columbia neighborhoods have some good soil in their backyards that more & more folks are digging up & growing food.
I am rarely able to attend these indoor meetings. Best chance to meet me is at our annual winter seed-swap, or our upcoming NW Barter Fair & Farmers Seed Swap mostly likely Nov 5th. There are some great classes offered at Inspiration Farm with Brian & team. This sunday Dov will present a class on Barefoot Doctor Medicine.
Hope this helps. I am rarely online during these warm days of harvest & being outside!
