Irene, I'd like to RSVP &  van-carpool to the willow harvesting & basket weaving class.

Can you share your phone number & email with me through a message?  Thanks!

Sara,

Well, for some reason, my class event announcement isn't showing up as approved on the main events page, so I'm resorting at the last minute to sending this out to individuals who expressed interest. Short notice for this one, but that could be good as it will mean more materials for all those who do show! : )

Basket Willow Harvesting Workshop
Saturday, January 29, 1 - 3 p.m. (tomorrow!)
Address is 5010 Elder Rd. Ferndale 98248
Directions: From I-5, Go west on Slater Rd to Elder Rd. Turn North (right) about 5 houses on the Right. If you get to Waltine you have gone too far.

"This workshop is the first in an ongoing series on harvesting materials for basket weaving. Basket willow is especially cultivated for its variety of colors and flexibility. We will harvest willow planted by Joan Nielsen, a local weaver who needs her stand cut to ensure continued production. Help us keep this precious local resource in good health and maximum production at the same time you learn how to recognize usable willow, whether wild or cultivated, and how to harvest, sort and store it. A later workshop will deal with how to prepare and use the willow after drying and seasoning is complete. This workshop is free and those who wish may take cuttings for planting. Please bring work gloves, one-handed snippers, and weather appropriate clothing. Van Pool will be arranged for those who request it in their RSVP."

Thanks Sara, sorry for the late reply but I just now figured out you had commented! Kinda slow working my way around this site. : }

As for the birch bark, I learned by experiment and reading. I am going to be offering basket making classes soon as part of reskilling and ecological restoration through the use of "waste" and invasives. I'll post those workshops on this site as soon as I put them together. I'm wondering if it would be better to do them sooner so people can give their creations as gifts, or if we should wait until after the holidaze? Any input?
