An update on the new groups birthed at Day 2 of the Unleashing, here's the list of groups and their conveners. A convener is that person responsible to bring their group together for their first official meeting. Or, perhaps, you WERE there on Day 2 and want to get involved with two or more working groups. Either way, contact the convener to find out more about the group and when/where it will meet. (If you WERE there at Day 2's working group session and you're already on the convener's list, there's no need for you to do more; the convener WILL be in touch with you about the upcoming meeting).

I've added links to existing group sites where I could make logical connections. Please check out all the groups on this site and join ones that fit for you. If you want to promote your group on this page, feel free to do so.

Re: #11 Personal Finance. We had a complex financial discussion on Day 2 and we were delighted to have a new member step up to be the Convener. The convener is Laura Sellens- laurasellens@gmail.com.

Hi David, I'm wondering why someone felt it necessary to add (alternative currency) to the title of our Economic Evolution work group? Does someone want to limit us to that subject? I notice no other group has had a subtitle inserted, so it seems we are being singled out. I would like us to remain more open and am surprised that you or someone is trying to limit us.

Thanks for sharing the bigger purpose of what will “eventually become the official Transition Whatcom Work Groups is to be working toward an Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP) for Whatcom County” in the above group Discussion David.
And also for recommending that folks start out by researching what such a plan might look like. “A good place to begin (after reading the Transition Handbook), is the first EDAP that was created in Kinsale Ireland.
http://transitionculture.org/wp-content/uploads/KinsaleEnergyDescen..."

If anyone has any questions on whether a special topic group or work-group has been created that they are interested in being part of, and are not sure which group to connect with, they can contact the convenor on the list from Open Space day that David posted below.
(Example, there are many already established Garden/Farm/Forest/Food/Nourishment groups created on this TW site, but as yet not a specialized food & land security group focused on working towards information to use in a EDAP – Energy Descent Action Plan.)

Good old ham radio. They have classes at AMRE, and we should connect with the ham radio geeks for sure.

Rob,

Remember the Northwest Freedom University? Some TW members and TWIGs have been working on reviving it for some months now as a Transition Whatcom Reskilling University...don't know if that's the name they've been contemplating or something slightly different.
Comment by Rob Olason on April 12, 2010 at 12:13pm
I was looking around for the reskilling group on the website. Perhaps I missed it or it is not yet created.

At any rate, I wanted to through out this idea for the name of this training entity:

Transition Whatcom
Reskilling U.

I can already see the Tee-Shirt possibilities...

Seriously though, how often can you change the name of an educational organization into an "action sentence?" And what could be a more appropriate description of the purpose of the reskilling educational process than focusing on its ability to help people to action as they seek the knowledge to better their own lives and improve the life of their community?

Wow, we had 180 people show up on Day 2, ready to get to work!

One topic that came up in a few circles was identifying who is already doing what in our community. A few years ago, Sustainable Bellingham recognized this as an important thing, and a Community Directory wiki was created. It's a bit outdated now, but at the time an intern put a lot of time into getting this info online, and much of it is still of value. Check it out, and let me know if you run into any problems.

Also, check out the "Local Links" page here at Transition Whatcom. Links to most of the local sustainability orgs in Whatcom County.
