Sorry Danah, bout your girls. I'm all over the electric fence...battery powered. I've heard a lot of LOUD "qweeeek!!!"s in the middle of the night, and now I think all the critters stay well away. Mmmmm, wonder if I could get a solar battery charger...

Sorry to hear about the carnage, I have experience that on several occasions now I have a real secure chicken coop. If any one would like to see my coop just let me know.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Danah. It's a good reminder to me ... and us all ..; to check our fences and coop security. Thanks, Alys, for all the worm suggestions. My girls got raw garlic along with their punkin seeds and pellets this morning. They dug right in, as always. We'll see how my morning eggs taste in the next few days!

Danah, so sorry to hear of the carnage. My experience with racoons is that no fence, unless electrified, can keep them out. You are right, they usually do find a way. Closing AND locking your hen house as soon after dusk is essential. The lock needs to be complex - just a hook and eye or hasp with knob alone will not do - they can and will figure them out; they have those tiny little hand paws.. I'd also be happy to help with re-enforcing your coop, fence construction, etc...

Danah, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. If you ever need a hand or two to help build a fence, mine are up for offer.

Hi All, I just wanted to add that I had found a fantastic, very effective way to build a hen house (chicken coop) that creates good bacteria from the hens poop. I would be happy to share with anyone interested. Contact me if you are.

Hmmm, garlic flavored eggs...then I wouldn't have to add garlic to my frittata!

Alys thank you for that amazing post....my ladies don't have worms, but it was still so educational! I think I'll start some of the preventative measures against worms you mentioned as the best way to health is to prevent rather than cure!
