Josh, is your fenced in area for the chickens covered? Owls are predators for chickens and I've been hearing owls in our neighborhood. Chickens are very alert about overhead predatory birds. I'm guessing that other animals even just near the chickens' area could also evoke alarm in them. A stray dog, raccoon, rats....good luck.

Something must have gotten inside the chicken fence this evening.

The hens woke Jessa and I up with terrified noises, and they screamed bloody murder when I sent them inside the coop. (They most often sleep on top, out in the open.) I double-checked that there were no mammals inside!

My neighbor came out to see what was going on, and thought that it sounded like a cat fight (no, I think it was the birds protesting!) Have you ever heard chickens make cat fight noises?

As if their recent molting wasn't enough, I bet the ladies won't lay for a week after this evening's escapade. Whew. Hope I can get back to sleep tonight after all that adrenaline!

Sandie Ledray came by with this sweet gift for me. Also, Chad Peterson came by the day of birth with a bouquet of flowers for me and a containers of King mealworms for the chickie-doos.....

The little chick in the second photo, the one with the dark markings, is no longer with us. It was attacked by another chicken and I found it without a head...so sad...The remaining mom and babies have been safely separated from the flock.

Angela, how is it going with your little chickie-doos? I'd like to come over and see them and your bunnies too! When might be good for you? Jamie

Hi Angela,
Feeling like a mom?
no, not at all. My perspective is one of steward. I have these creatures to care for and the land and plants to care for in order to feed the creatures and myself. It's more like that. I feel honored to provide for them and in turn they provide for me....part of the cycle.

Thanks for the photos! I love the one with the chick under mom-hen's wing. Do you feel a bit like a mom?

So, Scarlett's brood hatched today, all 4 of them - It was a lovely sight to behold. I feel honored with the opportunity!
