Help a southside neighbor  this Thursday at the  SB Roving Garden Work-Party followed with a shared meal!  (Gardeners don't hibernate in the spring- we help each other)

"SB Roving Garden Party - 6/9 - Chuckanut Village - 6:00pm
Join Sustainable Bellingham's 3rd annual Roving Garden Party series, where volunteers help their neighbors create an edible garden. These fun events consist of approximately 90 minutes of gardening, followed by a shared meal. Everyone is welcome!

"This week we'll be at the home of Alison Kutz, in Chuckanut Village creating a curvy ferro cement wall for some interesting raised beds!   A very curious technique that could have many varied applications.   This work party is designed to expand our construction horizons, for sure!   If you just want to come pull weeds in the perennial garden, please don't hesitate, but otherwise be ready to roll up your sleeves and learn. (Any early prep volunteers are welcome, as this project is requiring lots of coordination."

Howdy folks,

Well the gardeners are beginning to plant at the Caretakers House and we need to complete our deer fencing.  We're just a couple hours away!!!...And considering we have over 600 volunteer hours into this project you'll probably be glad that we can quit asking for help :)

If you can lend a hand tomorrow, Saturday, we'll be there from 10am to noon.

If I don't see you I'll know you are enjoying this long overdue sunshine.

David noted that Portland had finally approved its new Citywide Tree Project regulations, but unfortunately the City Council had removed the fruit and nut tree planting in the street planting strips regulation. So without any example or precedent to offer to the Bellingham Public Works folks, David recommended that we abandon this for now.

 

Deanna described the status of the new garden at the CLSR and noted that 2 of the rows are designated for our collaboration with Fairhaven Middle School. We discussed the need for volunteers in the summer to maintain the garden while school is out of session. Deanna will lead this effort for volunteer recruitment, and we all agreed to help with this.

We have another great opportunity to get the Transition Southside beds at the CLSR up and running!  

We'd LOVE your help the evening Thursday, 4/28!  We have a lot of work to do plus it is so amazing to watch a big patch of lawn turn into usable garden space!

Join the SB Roving Gardeners this Thursday April 28th for a Work-Party (with a Meal)! Meet 6-9pm at CLSR- Center for Local Self Reliance! 

Sustainable Bellingham volunteers & garden-hosts work together weekly at a roving garden-party series at a new location each week!

Tasks: Fill new beds with top soil, mulch with straw, wood chip new paths, possibly sheet mulch new planting area.
Food: Soup and bread will be provided. Bring your own beverage.

Requested Items to Bring: work gloves. (CLSR has shovels, and (3) wheel barrows.)

Deanna reported that the Center for Local Self Reliance had approved a garden plot on its grounds as a joint project between the Fairhaven Middle School Social Responsibility Group and Transition Southside. We agreed to apply for a TW 350 Day grant to support the creation of this project. Deanna will take the lead on writing the grant proposal. The idea is that this garden would be dedicated to producing food for the Food Bank.

We discussed the lack of public recycling opportunities outdoors in Fairhaven. Deanna and David will follow-up on this.

Fairhaven Middle School and Transition Southside to collaborate in creation of a garden at the Center for Local Self-Reliance. 

 

This proposal has been accepted  by CLSR, and work will begin soon in establishing this garden.   The beneficiary of the harvest will be our local Food Bank.   We'll need folks to help in this endeavor, so please stay tuned!!  More details to follow . . .

Shannon explained her experience over several years in working on the 21^st and Larrabee street end city lot and why this is not a good site for a community or a neighborhood garden.

We discussed the idea of submitting a proposal to the Center for Local Self-Reliance to create a Fairhaven Middle School/Transition Southside partnership garden on the Center’s grounds. We agreed that this idea is worth pursuing, and Deanna will draft a proposal for this.

We discussed the garden that Faith Lutheran Church is creating on its grounds on Northwest Ave. David will talk with folks at Our Saviours Lutheran Church to see if they have any interest in a church or neighborhood garden.

David described his research into street tree codes. No city that he searched—not Santa Cruz, Arcata, Eugene, Corvallis, Olympia, Seattle, or Madison WI—currently allows the planting of fruit or nut trees in planting strips. However Portland may legalize such planting this week. David will monitor this proposal to the Portland City Council and report the outcome.
