A CALL TO INSTALL A GARDEN:

Work Party for Vets Farm
Saturday, October 2 @9:00 a.m.

An appeal for a work party to convene in the Birchwood neighborhood on Sat. Oct. 2 at 9 a.m.
Ed Hoban is putting together a farm/garden program for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. I need help in clearing a weedy, overgrown lot, turning the soil and planting a cover crop in anticipation of getting some veterans farming it in the spring.
It would be helpful if you could bring a shovel (or two in case somebody shows up without one), and if you have any knowledge of pruning fruit trees, some pruning shears.

Please contact Ed if you can make it, and he will give you the address. Thanks, Ed Hoban hobanhomestead@comcast.net

Matt Packuss: the negative impact of airport expansion .
Kulshan Community Land Trust: update on the proposed Lafayette/Indiana St. affordable housing development.
Jack Weiss, City Councilman: possible addition of bike lanes on Northwest Ave.
Eve Magyar, Bellingham Technical College: update on construction
hope to see everyone there!

Birchwoodites, Birchwoodsters, Birchwooders, Birchwoodians......er....whatever.

We just had Cameron Garcia resign from the Neighborhood Association Board. Please wish him well on his move.
Please keep your ear open for anyone that might be interested in filling Cameron's position.
We will be rewriting the neighborhoods "vision statement" this year and organizing to rewrite the neighborhood plan over the next year. We could use some good help.

I think it's a good idea to have a meeting/potluck. Time to visit but also to discuss ways in which we can build our community and work together even more than we already do. For example, Cari has been trying to get an Azure Buying Circle going with a Birchwood drop-off - we could pass on info about that and other opportunities. I could host here but it would be weather-dependent. Probably better to get an indoor place given this year's weird weather.

Amy Martin sent out a message the other day suggesting a Transition Birchwood potluck. Although Jasmin and Heather have been organizing Sunday potlucks through the summer (see note below), it sounds like a good idea to me to have an official Transition Birchwood meeting/potluck, possibly late Sept./early October.

Amy, are you willing to host?
