Please see message below from Pastor Swanson regarding a new community garden in the neighborhood

Greetings:

I'm glad to be able to tell you that at the annual meeting of the congregation this past Sunday (Jan 30) the Faith Community Garden was approved by a large majority.  We have $5,000 in hand towards the water line, and as soon as the rest of the funds are in hand we will be breaking ground.  Grant apps are ready to go, and so are we!!!

If anyone in Birchwood neighborhood is interested in reserving one of the raised beds, or wants to help out in any way, please contact us.  For further details and progress on the project, visit our website:  www.faithbellingham.org.  The garden page will be up and running within the next few days.

As a Kulshan Community Land Trust home owner and Birchwood neighborhood resident I am helping get the word out about this work party in our neighborhood. The location is at Indiana and Lafayette where the Land Trust is currently in the process of purchasing a number of lots that are adjacent to a trail that many locals use. I really appreciate the Land Trust's desire for this site and future homes to be a positive contribution to the neighborhood. . This work party is an opportunity to see the site and help give it a head start. (actual building is a few years off.) I'm hoping that the garden spots could be cultivated next spring and produce veggies for anyone who needs them. Here's the info:

Saturday October 23rd 9am to 1pm.

Location: At the corner of Indiana and Lafayette. (take Indiana off Patton to the end of Indiana just 2 blocks)

Join KulshanCLT as we prepare garden spots, weed and prune fruit trees at our new home sites. This site is adjacent to a popular neighborhood walking trail and our work will preserve and enhance the natural features enjoyed by all. We will be pruning fruit trees of an old orchard to help the trees. Removal of invasive weeds and doing the first steps to prepare for vegetable gardens to enhance our local resiliency.

This is a family, kid-friendly event!

Preregistration is requested. Call the Whatcom Volunteer Center, 734-3055.

Coffee, Snacks and Pizza will be provided.
Bring: Gloves, and if you have them, any of the following: pruners, loppers, shovels and rakes. (label your tools)

Regarding a meeting/potluck. I'm glad folks are showing interest. I'm VERY interested, BUT October has become a jam-packed month! Not sure when I could fit it in...maybe during the last week?

Anyone want to take on hosting/organizing? Various dates could be posted on Doodle, and people could respond with dates that work for them.
