Our Port has only 3 Port commissioners-- so the majority in position could easily change with this election. Please come help give the Port a better vision of our communities views as well as add to its research in getting more community feedback in regards to the Airport. You may sign up to ask questions or just come and educate yourself on the candidates and your community views. Please scroll down or open the attached for further information. We would GREATLY appreciate helping us get the word out by forwarding the information to your family and neighbors, posting flyers on your websites and/or the old fashioned "water cooler talks". Please, help us encourage people to participate in a decision that will greatly effect our community for years to come. Any ideas in promotion also appreciated

See you there!

Hi Whatcome Transitioners!

We are a family of four, with two little girls (2 yo and 1 mo) and are currently in Spokane. We are heading to resettle in the "better half" of the state ;) very soon and are looking for a wonderful place to live. We would love to be in a cohousing/ ecovillage-type set-up, or just a great older single-family home in a very "transition" neighborhood. Do you know of anyone looking to rent their place?
Hi Whatcome Transitioners!

We are a family of four, with two little girls (2 yo and 1 mo) and are currently in Spokane. We are heading to resettle in the "better half" of the state ;) very soon and are looking for a wonderful place to live. We would love to be in a cohousing/ ecovillage-type set-up, or just a great older single-family home in a very "transition" neighborhood. Do you know of anyone looking to rent their place? Are you looking to rent or maybe have a room? We are open, as well, to sharing a larger house with the right folks.

A little about us: Bryan is a brewer (now, at Boundary Bay), teacher, permaculture designer, plant-person; Clare is a at-home mama, yoga teacher, doula, extraordinaire; Edie (2) is so much fun to be around and has a bright, funny, cuddly personality; and Althaea (1 mo) is squeaky, wide-eyed, and loves to nurse.

We would like to be w/in 5 miles of downtown, pay less than $1100/ mo, be somewhere scenic, with trees/ parks/ good market(s) around, and be able to garden or even install permaculture designs on the property. We are open to trade and other creative arrangements.

Thank you for helping us to offer our best in the amazing Bellingham area! It has been our dream for a while to settle here. Please let us know if you have any 'leads'.

Blessings,

For your info, here below are some notes from the most recent Birchwood Neighborhood Assoc. meeting, where one item on the agenda was Squalicum Park. I have been the recipient of some emails on this topic from a woman named Wendy. She has some concerns and I think some good ideas for alternatives - ideas I think that are consistent with values around resilience and small, slow, simple solutions that don't require a huge input of resources, money, and energy. I have been the recipient of some emails on this topic from a woman named Wendy. She has some concerns and I think some good ideas for alternatives - ideas I think that are consistent with values around resilience and small, slow, simple solutions that don't require a huge input of resources, money, and energy. Unfortunately, I am hearing that this park plan is pretty much a done deal - since it is specific to a former Greenways funding initiative approved by the voters, and it is a regional park rather than a neighborhood park. At any rate, it is worth reading Wendy's letter - see attachment:

Squalicum Park Phase 3. Scott Rockwell

Scott reported on the public meeting concerning Phase 3 of the Squalicum Park Master Plan. Phase 1 and 2 are finished. Phase 3 will be starting Winter 2014. Phase 3 includes:

a second baseball field - unfenced

outfield that can be used for other sports- soccer, lacrosse, rugby

70’ tall light pedestals for both baseball fields-light is oriented down on the fields rather than out

playground for young children and one for older kids

basketball court

bathroom by off leash dog area

large picnic shelter

overhead utilities will be put under ground

winter sledding area

At the meeting, there were questions about Park programming. The Master Plan includes large areas for ball fields but some people thought they were not utilized that much. The central hill currently in the Park will be graded to make the new ball field.

Visit the Park Department website for more information on Phase 3.

Are you motivated to reduce pollution in your local waterways? Did you know that you can take direct action on your own property and in your daily actions to ensure that cleaner water flows into Puget Sound? Join staff from RE Sources North Sound Baykeeper Team, City of Bellingham Public Works, and Bellingham Technical College to find out how!

You are invited to a walking tour of the Birchwood Watershed on Saturday, May 12th at 10:00am. Meet at Bellingham Technical College in front of G building. We will explore portions of the Birchwood neighborhood, stopping to view green infrastructure features, then we will tour new green infrastructure on BTC campus. The walk will last for approximately 2 hours, ending with a treat of cookies and refreshments at BTC.

On this tour, you will:

-- See what’s under a City of Bellingham storm drain manhole cover and find out where the stormwater goes.
-- Become familiar with low impact development techniques such as rain barrels, rain gardens, and permeable pavers.
-- Learn how changes in your daily actions can improve water quality.
-- Listen to property owners share their experiences with the green infrastructure features they have installed.

-- Learn how Bellingham Technical College manages stormwater contributions to Little Squalicum Creek.
-- Have access to free brochures and a list of resources offering more technical information about low impact development and stormwater management.

Everyone is welcome. Be prepared for rain or shine…but remember that this is a watershed, so if it is raining we will have an even better opportunity to see how it works!

For more information, please contact Lee First, Pollution Prevention Specialist, at (360) 733-8307 or leef@re-sources.org.
Community Energy Challenge for Birchwoodtag:transitionwhatcom.ning.com,2010-07-15:2723460:Topic:264152010-07-15T13:25:18.186ZDavid MacLeodhttp://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/profile/DavidMacLeod

We are new to the Birchwood neighborhood....We've got a garden going here on
Cherrywood ave. There are numerous animal neighbors who swing by daily
now to see what I'm serving in the garden buffet. One deer in particular
loves to wade through the strawberry bed munching as she/he goes and
has just finished off the tips of our sugar snap peas. Seems to prefer
just the tips but pulls up the whole plant in the process of nibbling
and leave the uprooted pea plant laying there. I'm always seeing
squirrels out there. They seem to investigate where ever I've been
working the soil leaving little dug up areas. Maybe they think I, like
them, have hidden some nuts. Or maybe they are leaving me some of their
peanuts which the next door neighbors give to them. I knew there'd be
slugs but I didn't expect pill bugs to eat the veggies. I find them
burrowed down at the base of the new bean spouts and a few other young
starts. A google search on pill bugs brought up the info that the pill
bugs mostly eat decaying stuff (yeah) but will also go for the tiny new
rootlets of sprouting vegetables especially green beans and squash
plants...Bingo! that is what I observe. Even certain birds like to
sample the green starts and greatly mangle them in the process. Deer
strolling through the newly planted, and tiny starts get trompled.....

I am simultaneously tickled and disappointed. Tickled to see all the
animals and their gusto for life, disappointed that my hard work is
thwarted.....I tell myself not to expect much food from this garden this
year....And to appreciate the healthy exercise I get gardening and the hours of peaceful
time close to the earth. Yes I do love it.

I see that other people have netting strung up around their gardens. To
keep out deer I assume. What about squirrels, rats birds rabbits and
_______? I've seen all of these folks in our garden too.

Any one willing to tell me what works for them? Give me a call: Angela
We are moving in this week to our place on Cherrywood. I worked in the garden for the first time this morning. There are the usual dandelion, and buttercup. I'm not overwhelmed by the thought of continually weeding them. There is a lot of morning glory coming up everywhere!!!! I know this one is hard to keep at bay or get rid of. I'm interested in any tips from experience about dealing with morning glory. I already know NOT to rototill . I'm willing to pull them up and to keep at it repeatedly.…

But I might have a limit of patience with that. I know some people use round up on it. I'm hoping to keep organic and not have to rely on herbicides. Any ideas?
NorthernNeighbors.Org : Neighborhood OnLine Newstag:transitionwhatcom.ning.com,2010-04-15:2723460:Topic:189142010-04-15T02:35:38.630ZHeather Khttp://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/profile/HeatherK
