The vision for this group is to be in the flow of the season, anticipating the appropriate gleaning time for the various fruits of this abundant Bellingham, in order to be ready to take advantage of what nature provides freely. These projects could easily evolve into a community cottage industry based on integrity and barter, where tedious work is made efficient and social by working together as a community. Not everyone needs to own a cider press, or all the canning equipment necessary to make jam, so we will utilize Share to Build, Craigslist, and connections on the grape vine to coordinate fruit trees, supplies, and people to make it happen this season. There will also likely be a end-of-the-year harvest bartering festival early in October to celebrate and exchange the goods.

Please read my blog post, which may give you an idea of my inspiration and passion for starting this group.

Before the Harvest there can be Edible Tree & Shrub Plantings!
Also, building solar food dryers would be a great project that someone could initiate.
(We love our organic dried pears & fruit and they are great for traveling & store light-weight in the pocket).

Re meeting Tues May 11th - I won't be able to attend this time, as the Larry Korn, the editor of classic book- The One Straw Revolution, on natural farming, will be in town from May 10-12...I hope you'll all check out the two events under the Events tab, plus there are plans evolving for a May 12 'Community Open House at Forest Garden"...around noon...

Yay! I'm so excited that other people are excited about this! I was thinking of having our first meeting on Tuesday, May 11th at 7:00 p.m. at The Public Market. Would that work for everyone? If not, please let me know. My schedule is fairly flexible these days... Thanks!

Awesome idea Christie! I was involved with the Community Fruit Tree Harvest when I was living in Seattle, and it was a blast! We donated most of the harvest to local food banks, which often don't have a lot of fresh fruit. But it would be great to learn and teach how to preserve fruits to enjoy all year round! Sign me up and let me know how I can help!

Mmmm cherries! I changed the picture to Italian plums because they look riper and more like gleaning straight from the tree! ; )
