River Haven

Riverhaven is a community located on the confluence of Fishtrap Creek and the Nooksack River that is founded on Permaculture principles. The natural current of this place is pulling together a diverse group of people with a common vision of self resiliency, varied skills and talents, and a common respect for the Earth & her inhabitants. Current residents are Chris Testa & Cadence, Krista Rome, and Richard and Hilary Kauffman. We are just beginning, but are already growing and raising most of our own organic food and processing our own fuel (waste vegetable oil). Riverhaven is also the home of the Straight Vegetable Oil Co-op where members can share equipment and space and provide their own fuel. We will be teaching ongoing workshops on homesteading, Permaculture, and related skills- and we host informal visits and work parties frequently- so contact us if there is something you want to learn or share.

Here is a good article that Charles sent me on dealing with flooding, very applicable to River Haven.

~ Rocket Outdoor Cook Stove Workshop at River Haven ~ A Fine and Sunny Day!

Jaren adding the Perlite (10), cement (1), water (2) mixture to the 25 gallon barrel.

Peter's Rocket stove demo heating up water

small and VERY dry timber sticks is all that is needed to get a roaring stove heated.

Peter - Our workshop instructor

Doug brought his stove and supported Peter at the workshop

This was the project stove that Peter brought for us all to work on together.

the inside

Travis cutting out the hole for the fire chamber tubing

new tubing put inside

Travis and Peter discover that the tubing appears a bit high up and Travis cleverly creates a solution by filling the lower chamber with soda cans instead of using up precious/valuable ~ perlite/cement mixture !!  Great thinking on the fly and adaptation with recyclables!!!

Travis then fills the top portion of the soda cans with the cardboard soda box in order to create a flat surface to receive the insulative perlite/cement mixture next.

Travis packs perlite/cement mixture around the fire chamber tubing

Because Travis was unable to locate the correct size vertical inner tubing to connect with the fire chamber tubing - he had to postpone completion until another day.

All appeared to have a blast and some talk was devoted to gardening out in the pasture, oil burning vehicles and of course the children enjoyed themselves and the animals.

 ~ Namaste ~ Jamie
