Transition Whatcom has a project on the Home and Landscape tour this weekend (June 25/26 from 10AM to 5PM)- the project we helped with across from the Farmers Market for the 350 Home and Garden Challenge. This is a high visibility location so it is a great opportunity for us to spread the word about TW! If YOU want to volunteer to be at the site, for any subset of the tour time, to answer questions about Transition Whatcom please contact Warren Miller at warren@wavefrontmarketing.com. Thanx!

Calling all wanna-be Mud Girls & friends & fans of Alison this Thurs 6/9 for SB Roving Garden Work Party at 6pm-7:30, followed by a shared meal.  Come early to help with set up & preparations.  We  will be making Ferro Cement garden beds. A nice curvy line of hog wire, chicken wire and a wee bit of rebar at the top for re-inforcement, and you smear on gloppy concrete and finish with a trowel.

"Come join the fun - espec. if you have never done this before. It ain't cob - mud and straw - but it sure looks similar when it's done.

Full Event details at- http://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/events/sb-roving-garden-party-69

" If you just want to come pull weeds in the perennial garden, please don't hesitate, but otherwise be ready to roll up your sleeves and learn. (Any early prep volunteers are welcome, as this project is requiring lots of coordination.

* Where: 3515 18th St. (down towards Chuckanut Creek).

* Requested Items to Bring: Gloves, wire pliers/cutters, trowels, buckets

* Tasks: Adding the wire and cement mix to already functioning raised bed walls. There is plenty of weeding to do as well.

quote: “A school garden is being installed at the Happy Valley Elementary School in 2011 in the Happy Valley Neighborhood. A Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) (AmeriCorps) crew is working to build the garden in the front of the school, on the grassy field north of the school office on 24th Street. Planning and collaboration for the construction of the garden was initiated in December, with installation starting in January.

The WCC crew has been working with Happy Valley Elementary School principal, faculty and PTA members, in collaboration with the Happy Valley Neighborhood Association (HVNA), to create the school community garden. Initial funding for the garden has been provided from the Happy Valley PTA and from a grant from BP Cherry Point Refinery Building to the school. Construction of the raised beds for the garden will take place as a "work party" on Mon. Jan 17th, with adults and student volunteers at work shifts from 8:30-11:30 am and 12:30-3:30 pm.  We will spread cardboard to cover the grassy field, then construct several 16-ft. wood raised beds, followed by spreading soil and mulch.  Bring rakes, hoes, buckets, pliers, and gloves. Other tools will be provided.”

Celt's "Garden Kit Project" 2011: Volunteers are welcome to help clean seed and pack the kits in January & February, Sunday afternoons 2:00 – 4:00.   Please call Celt first (360) 756-8957 to sign up to help with seed cleaning.

Celt creates free garden kits in two sizes: container/square foot garden and regular. “Originally begun as way to provide seeds to beginning gardeners, marginal income gardeners, students, and children with adult supervision, garden kits are for anyone who is gardening in small spaces. Designed to provide a long harvest in the Fourth Corner. Garden kit comes with two free tomato starts.
Seed for kits is saved, swapped, donated and purchased. & Donations cheerfully accepted.”
Thanks to many the 2010 volunteers & donors, who packed seed for 45 kits, 5 charities, 2 school gardens!

(Heirloom tomato, pepper and herb starts for sale April-June. Proceeds fund garden kits. Pre-order to reserve particular varieties.)

Volunteers still needed in Fairhaven at the 'Center for Local Self-Reliance' – CLSR- (the old rose garden), to help build & complete the deer-proof fence, and with fundraising! We had a great work party on Nov 6th and thanks to Laura S & the Transtion Fairhaven team we also had live music and fresh pressed apple cidar from a hand-built recycled materials cidar press that has been donated to the CLSR!
To find out how you can get involved in the current priorities at CLSR, contact either Shannon at her Transition personal page: http://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/profile/ShannonMarisor contact Steve W at caretakershouse@gmail.com or go to CLSR website at: http://www.caretakershouse.org/

First draft on name "Planting Seeds of Change Volunteers" will be changed.
The group was approved unexpectedly by TW admin before the community connection was established.
I do have a good idea of what will emerge as a name.
R - I liked your suggestion though -
'Volunteers: Planting Seeds of Change', but to honor what is emerging with the vision Naomi is birthing I will most likely not use the words "...of change"....within the title.
