In case any of you are needing an affordable health insurance plan, I just learned about a new plan called Washington Health (it is the same as Basic Health Plan but without the subsidy from WA state). The premiums are something like $120 to $200 a month depending on your age. I am definitely going to apply for it, since I am on the waiting list for Basic Health, which is probably 100,000 people long! You can visit www.washingtonhealth.hca.wa.gov or call 800-660-9840 for information.

The book I'm reading is Civilization and Capitalism 15th to 18th Century By Fernand Braudel. Volume 1 (of 3) is titled The Structures of Everyday Life. This volume deals with world population, food, drink, housing, clothing, technology, energy, money, towns, and cities.

So far, I've only read the population chapters and was impressed by the observation that famine and malnutrition were major factors in maintaining a very low population expansion rate and a very short life expectancy for commoners throughout the period. The rich and nobility didn't do much better.

I'm looking forward to the chapters specifically dealing with diet. I suspect it will give us some ideas on what not to do. I'll be glad to share here whatever seems relevant.

Another agenda item for our next meeting -

Tris - I like your thinking! Creating a nutrition education group for wellness would be fabulous! Perhaps we have a few folk that could bring their wisdom to the 'table'? Perhaps you could share what you are learning here? What is the book you are reading?

Hi Everyone
I would like to plan our next meeting. Since we have 25 members here and others that may be interested, I will post it as an event under the Events tab.

Agenda items:
1. Post Unleashing - welcoming new members and bring forward what this group has been doing to date
2. Brainstorm projects and awareness raising ideas
3. Discuss who in this group might be interested in getting involved with the evolving leadership for Transtition Whatcom (June 2nd meeting coming up for this topic - Save the Date!)

So...check out the Events tab!

I just joined and have no idea what the discussion has been about, so sorry if this is way off base. However, I've been reading a pretty imposing history book that deals with the development of civilization and economics between the 13th and 18th centuries by focusing on the lives of everyday folks rather than just the kings, queens, and generals as is usually the case. It raises a lot of issues that we may have to address in our Transisiton work.

If we're lucky, we won't have too many plagues to worry about, but it may be that good nutrition will be more challenging than it has been recently. Good nutirtion is a pretty key part of maintaining health. So would it be withing the scope of your work to collaborate (maybe) with some folks from the food group at some point and come up with a seasonal diet that meets health needs and is based on locally produced, processed, and stored ag products? If no such diet is possible now, then we know we have some work to do.

Just a thought....

Whoops! seems I have been out of the loop for a while, have not been checking the web site as faithfully as I once did. I am very interested in health issues and how to eat and stay healthy in an increasingly unhealthy world. So, when is the next meeting??? one that I hope Cindi will be able to make cause she is now completely healed of that awful walking pneumonia....been there, not fun! Rest, rest, rest Cindi, lots of liquid and try some citricidal to help get rid of it all....hugs, Alys

Hi Everyone
Well, this was a first. I totally spaced our meeting today! I do have an excuse (I have walking pneumonia) but it isn't an excuse to not at least someone know so that they can pick up where I can't be!

I am so sorry if folks showed up and there was no sign of an event! I am very curious to see what DID happen! (I am so embarrassed.)

Did the meeting happen without Chris and I? Chris found herself in another commitment that ran long and she thought I would be there so didn't press to attend either. I would love to hear from someone - either post here or shoot me an email: cindilandreth@gmail.com

Again, I am so sorry! And....let's schedule something in a week or two. I should be better by then (I hope. I hear walking pneumonia takes a while to recover from.).

I hope you all met, and if you didn't, I hope you were out enjoying this crazy awesome weather we have been having!

Hello everyone,
I scheduled another time for us to get together and keep exploring health beyond oil. SUNDAY, FEB 21, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the CO-OP CONNECTIONS BUILDING on Forest St. in downtown Bellingham. Hope to see many of you there...

Yes,there will be many more meetings, I am sure. Have you read the notes posted here by Judith? Is there anything in. Particular you would like to research, bring to the group, open a discussion about, or offer as ways to shift mindsets, or...? Our list was a brainstorm...perhaps you could add to it?

Other than that, Chris Wolf will be scheduling a meeting for mid February. Hope to meet you there!
