"It is the single largest threat to production agriculture that we have ever seen."

- Andrew Wargo III, the president of the Arkansas Association of Conservation Districts, quoted in a must-read New York Times article by William Neuman and Andrew Pollack, May 4, 2010, "Farmers Cope With Roundup-Resistant Weeds." The article describes how overuse of Monsanto's Roundup on Monsanto's Roundup Ready GMO crops has resulted in a new generation of superweeds that must be sprayed with highly toxic pesticides.

(thanks to Shannon M for news quote)

continue quote: "....Just as the heavy use of antibiotics contributed to the rise of drug-resistant supergerms, American farmers’ near-ubiquitous use of the weedkiller Roundup has led to the rapid growth of tenacious new superweeds..
...Roundup — originally made by Monsanto but now also sold by others under the generic name glyphosate....
.....“The biotech industry is taking us into a more pesticide-dependent agriculture when they’ve always promised, and we need to be going in, the opposite direction,” said Bill Freese, a science policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety in Washington. .....
....Of course, Monsanto stands to lose a lot of business if farmers use less Roundup and Roundup Ready seeds.....

GMO Awareness & Action group starting up!
Thanks for initiating this Brian! I've sent out a handful of invites.

It's seed-planting time...this is a good seed to plant. Along with helping to raise the awareness of the effects of GMO seeds, and how they can end up in our animal feeds and human foods, I'd like us to learn who are the longtime farmers who remember saving their own seeds and inviting them to share at some of our hands-on educational gather-ins.
