"Compost & Animal Poo & Organic Matter Locations"- (both free & cost-fee) - discussion/forum & listing of resources has been started at -http://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/group/organic/forum/topics/compos...

Many ideas to David's question shared on sister group "Organic Gardeners/Growers & Edible-Forest-Gardens & Permaculture" in the March 24-27th section.

I would like to do sheet mulching all over my yard and so I need a lot of cheap mulch material. Does anyone have some ideas as to what is the best for the price? Old hay or straw is what I would like I guess but there must be other ideas out there.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
Sincerely,
David

Check Craig's list. A neighbor just got a load for free, and free loading. Just bring a truck.

Hi Chris & all! Walter gave a great Soils class Thursday night!
It was great to see garden friends & be back in the temperate-garden Salish Sea bioregion after this winter's tropical edible garden experiences!

Are there going to be weekly Saturday work gatherings at the main urban BUGS garden site? I noticed there was not an Event posted on the TW site....

It might be possible to post one event for the whole spring or summer if you put a later end date on the event. It would also spread the word of work parties if you sent the info to Shannon's Garden E-News, which most of us channel our garden events & news to.

Just a reminder, this Sat, March 13th
Master Gardener Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop
Hands on WORKSHOP at 9am - noon
@ Tennant Lake Interpretive Center
5236 Nielsen Avenue, Ferndale.

Various grafting techniques will be demonstrated. Then graft your own tree to take home!
Dwarf and mini-dwarf apple and pear rootstock is available for $2.50, and scion wood will be available for 50 cents – or bring your own. Come early for best selection.
Rootstocks do sell out!
Participation is free. Call 676-6736 for more information.

Hi all ~ Just wanted to encourage everyone to check out a class this Thursday, March 11th at 7pm at the Center for Expressive Arts at 1317 Commercial. Soils and Soil Building by Ferndale farmer Walter Haugen. Check out events page or BUGS website for full details.

We had an awesome work party this past Saturday, nine people showed up to work on the D and Girard lot. Next Saturday we're breaking ground on a new lot next to Sunnyland Elementary School. Check out BUGS webpage for more info. www.bellinghamurbangardens.org

Thanks, Chris

Impromptu Event Alert!

Permaculturist Jan Spencer is planning to join in on the next BUGS work party this Saturday (March 6th) at 10:30 AM, meeting on the corner of D and Girard. Come join us, and you'll probably learn some things from Jan in the process. At least I can pretty much guarantee you'll enjoy hanging out with him.

Jan is a permaculturist from Eugene, OR., well known for his suburban permaculture property conversion (See TW Video page). He's in town to give a presentation on Friday night on "Global Trends - Local Choices." I hope to see many of you there!

Hi Everyone ~ I was just checking out the BUGS page and saw all of your faces on the sideline and realized I haven't given you all an update in sometime. BUGS got accepted into the Food to Bank on Program with Sustainable Connections, so we have to be official now. Myself and Nick Spring, and others, have been working diligently the past couple of weeks doing some major soil work at one of big sites. Next time you are driving/biking/walking check out the corner of D and Girard, a large old homesite that we are rehabilitating for food production. Bringing in wood chips, spent mushroom spawn, straw, horseshit, and compost to try and create a vibrant new soil above the questionable existing dirt. Soil tests will verify the futility of our efforts.

We are currently working with at least 4 lots, and are in search of other good-size sunny lots, the nearer to the Lettered Streets the better. We are hoping to offer several CSA shares from our sites and will likely have excess produce for experimenting with some new markets. The website www.bellinghamurbangardens.org is evolving slowly. We do have a low-tech space for posting garden space or garden needs, and the calendar is online, and will have as many garden/farm events as I can manage to record. The setup is not nearly as refined as this site, but will hopefully serve its purpose.

Feel free to contact if you have any items of garden importance to share. Thanks, and more to follow.

Hello everybody - I didn't take the time to see how many of you are in the other garden group here (could these groups be combined??) but I thought this alert to be important enough to send to both groups. (thanks, Chuck)

"So I'm emailing y'all because it supposed to get real cold at night on Friday, Saturday, and especially Sunday. So be sure to:

*Bring in all your houseplants, orchids, CYMBIDIUMS(!), and tender plants,
*Put your outdoor containers and hanging baskets in the garage for the night,
*Water your new plantings, or plants that you haven't watered for a while,
BUT WATER THE GROUND NOT THE FOLIAGE!
*At night you can cover your tomatoes or other annuals like impatiens, marigolds, petunias, etc. with frost blanket or plastic or something to insulate them from the drop in temperature.
*Or bring in all your green tomatoes and set them indoors in the dark to ripen - it will work for a lot of them.
*Also, pick all of your beans, basil, dill, peppers and other "tender" veggies cuz the frost will nail them.

Hope this helps and stay warm!
Cheers, Chuck"
