Bike Bellingham is the 2011 local 350.org event

350.org has launched a 2011 project set for 9/24/2011, called "Moving Planet" with a website at www.moving-planet.org. In Bellingham, a project has risen up called "Bike Bellingham" which will feature family friendly bike rides from ten city schools that will converge at the Bellingham City Hall flag plaza for a climate rally/info fair from noon to 2 pm. There will also be an advanced ride from the plaza to the proposed Cherry Point Coal terminal leaving at 2 pm. If you would like more information, go to facebook.com/350bellingham. I will be posting additional information here as I learn more. However, there is a need for volunteers to help the day of the event, with pre-event postering canvassing for sponsors.

There may also be some other events being planned for September for International Peace Day, Living Democracy, and our Whatcom Food Network forum.

Moving Planet” has been visioned by Bill McKibben of 350.org. He calls it a day to move beyond fossil fuels, a day to get day to get people out in the streets in large number, on foot & on bicycle, to bring strong calls to our leaders that we need to get off fossil fuels & move to 350 ppm. (Some of us will be camping in the forest that weekend ;-)

Comment by Heather K on May 12, 2011 at 8:27pm: I've learned that BC is a major exporter of coal, and the the Port of Vancouver is the largest exporter of coal in North America.

BC also exports huge amounts of U.S. Coal.

StopCoal.ca has been taking action north of the border, in April at the Port of Vancouver head office.

Bill McKibben, author of 'Eaarth', was quoted in BC as saying: “...Although he lived in Toronto as a child & has a deep fondness for Canadian culture, he believes that without a change of direction deadly carbon emissions will be Canada's largest legacy to the world. There is no way to balance the books until Canada stops the tar sands (project in Alberta).

The natural gas fracking in BC that fuels the tar sands which produce oil that gets shipped to Asia is, by itself, one of the primary sources of global warming in the world.

Enormous coal reserves from Montana & Wyoming, as well as BC, come through BC to be shippped to Asia....Canada has become the drug dealer for a very addictive substance with very little discussion...dont worry about the Middle East. If you guys take care of Alberta, the others can take care of the rest.”

Walker,Jr. on May 8, 2011 at 7:49pm: Due to technicalities wherein county government might find itself in a quasi-judicial status sooner than we think, we need concerned citizens to share their opinions with a variety of media outlets, the Whatcom County Council, and the Executive Pete Kremen now. Once they have a permit for the Georgia Pacific Terminal [GPT] in hand they have a quasi-judicial status and cannot receive any input from the public. Write now while they are still allowed to listen.

Comment by J. C. Walker,Jr. on April 28, 2011 at 11:03pm: Just returned from the Acme meeting on the Peabody coal train project. Bob Ferris was reluctant to push the climate change aspect. I feel the Us vs. Them foisted by Mayor Pike needs to be met with a message which unifies. I also learned of a rumor WWU is being pressured to not talk about the coal train. I wonder if the Herald has the time to do any investigative journalism? One can only hope and dream...

After B'ham "progressives" understand they get to vote for county council candidates, they might want to turn their attention to the nose ring stemming from Pike and Peabody.
