As Stephanie has posted, things are happening fast with our 350.org event. We want to plant food bearing trees in school gardens. We want to transport those trees via pedal power with bike cargo trailers and we want to make a bunch of noise so the rest of Bellingham and Whatcom County hear about this activity!

I had the crazy idea of starting at City Hall, and involving the mayor--maybe even have the mayor agree to pedal a cargo trailer laden with perennials to a planting site. Today we got the word that we can start this project in front of City Hall, and the mayor will not only join us, he is going to help peddle some of the trees to one of the planting sites!

I've put out the request for 20 bikers with cargo trailers to join in on this activity, and we have three so far: myself, Joseph and the Mayor of Bellingham!

We need some more folks with bike trailers who can help make this happen. Imagine how much fun this will be! October 10 in Bellingham? You know the weather will be great!

Just bring your bike, a bike trailer and some rain gear. You'll be glad you did, and we will have a fantastic 350.org event, and people all over Bellingham will thank us decades from now, for the wonderful food they will eat from the trees and bushes we plant on 10-10-10.

Rob, Great job on getting the Mayor on board and securing City Hall for the starting point of this event. I'll send the word out to my groups and try to recruit more bikes with trailers for deliveries and work parties.

Tristan, thanks for the go ahead on the poster - Laura from the Co-op said no problem posting the donation poster at both of their locations and I submitted a donation request to them as well. I thought maybe we could post one at Resources if Rob can clear that. Any other ideas where to post it?

I still would like to follow up with the idea of a 350.org banner at the Peace Arch in Blaine. I'll do some research tonight on transition groups over the border.

Help us organize the Whatcom County 10-10-10 events! We are meeting every Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm at Bloom Restaurant on Cornwall Ave. in downtown Bellingham. We have several great projects we are planning, but there is always room for your project!

Our 10-10-10 group will meet this Friday (8/20) at the Bloom restaurant on Cornwall Ave. at 2:30 pm. A number of group members can meet then and anyone else who is free at that time who would like to attend is most welcome! We are less than 2 months from 10-10-10!

Well Stephanie, if you haven't yet Doodled, you haven't yet fully lived. Just joking, it's a way to find out when everyone can meet. Pretty cool. I can meet Wed. early afternoon, Thurs or Fri this week and then not for a while. Anybody interested?

Rob, I posted about my bike-power generator on the Heart and Soul Group Discussion "what are you doing? What's working?" if you're curious.

Also, I concur about Trees for the Future. I found out about them at the Unleashing, did some homework and gave them some money to plant trees on degraded hillsides in Haiti. They use agroforestry principles, meeting many needs of the community with the tree selections they make. The main point I remember from the book, 'Collapse' by Jared Diamond is that the societies that came back from the brink of collapse to thrive again were the ones that re-prioritized their trees and soil, and the tropics is where we have the greatest opportunity to sequester carbon in fast growing trees while improving the quality of lives of destitute people. Whoops, where did that soap-box come from? Pardon me. But I really like that group.

Hi Rob, great to hear you'll pursue seeking a non-profit partnership!

Something else I've been thinking of: I recall learning that planting trees in the tropics can create more carbon sequestration than planting in the temperate zone (where we live)...
Sometimes I wonder if cash-flush countries/citizens putting their dollars towards tree planting in the tropic zones would have a greater effect than the same in our own temperate zones.
An organization that I've supported in the past, that does educational & tree planting projects in the tropical zones, is Trees for a Future: http://www.plant-trees.org/
TW member iMa K was hired to work for them, and last I heard she moved to CA.

Planting trees & preserving trees is a high priority ....the worldly & monitary details related to obtaining sponsorship from non-profit organizations can be very useful; I don't want my having brought the non-profit topic up to slow down any momentum for doing the actual work of tree planting, wherever there are people willing to plant & care for trees, both locally & in the tropics.
