I suggest we start with a list library of tools available to be lent, so people can check the list before buying new stuff.  Included should be the name and phone of the person with the tool, mainly because I have a terrible problem with getting anything really useful from the ning site.

The good news, or the bad news, depending on how you look at it, is that it might be much easier to ask 'what tools don't we have yet?' From Tom's description of a conversation with Bellingham Public Library, what seems to be needed most is an infrastructure for collecting and processing tool requests. I narrowly escaped buying a coil roofing nailer recently, anyone? I have two boxes of crown staples for which I don't have a gun. I think it is possible to set this system up virtualy via email alerts. Members of the group recieve an email, the subject of which is 'looking for roofing nailer'. Let's try it this way for a while untill it grows out of hand, then think about adding a more structured approach to deal with the unwieldy volume of traffic.
I had thought of this problem too, the thought of cataloging every tool I have is daunting, and I don't even have that much. However, I am the type of person who would rather look at a list of what's available than post a query for help. Maybe it's time to get over it.

Remember that the "Community Asks and Offers" Group was created for this purpose:  Requests and offers of goods, services, tools, etc.
