Transition Whatcom

Dear Transition Whatcom Friends,

I wanted to share an article I wrote about our local Community Engagement Fellows program ( as a permaculture project.

It was published online in Permaculture Magazine:

We're still recruiting folks to participate in Community Engagement Fellows in the coming year. The next round of the program will begin in October. Participation is free, and open to anyone who identifies as a community educator (whether you have a job title or not).

The program is focused on building new collaborations involving higher education and community leaders/organizations that "nurture engaged citizens, serve the public, and improve our region and the planet." It's hosted by the Center for Community Learning at WWU and Service Learning Office at Whatcom Community College.

If you're interested in learning more about the program, contact Travis Tennessen ( or Kristine Smith (

This is great! I love the application of permaculture principles to issues of community engagement.  The Transition movement began as exactly that.

Here is an early article by Rob Hopkins on "Powerdown and Permaculture - at the Cusp of Transition."

Thank you for sharing Travis, and thank you for participating in this important work.
