Three different aspects of Urban Improvement will frame the event. Workshops throughout the day will outline these concepts and invite participants to contribute to the project. Involvement will range from painting in shapes to placing stones or planting plants. When folks leave the site they will feel a sense of participating in a community-based project which has improved their city.
“Urban Art Workshop”-
2-3 different murals as well as two sheds will be painted onsite. A pre-drawn “Paint by Number” mural will let people contribute to a good looking final picture. A “Fill in the Blank” design will give space inside of a larger image for people to contribute their own creations.
Interface
Tarp/Canvas laid on ground. Plywood sheets laid out with prior sketches and painting ideas drawn up already. Participants can either fill in blank or contribute their own design to the fill in the blank.
Timeline
9am-1pm 2-3 people
1pm-4pm 2-3 people
“Growing Urban Biodiversity”-
Two large beds will be planted with perennial shrubs, small trees and other plants. Particpants will be able to plant plants into the constructed beds or help with mulching in the garden space.
Interface
Plants will be placed in a well-prepped site. Mulch/compost/topsoil will be added to the planting beds. Participants will plant plants into the beds and spread mulch around completed plantings.
Timeline
9am-1pm 2-3 people
1pm-4pm 2-3 people
“Crash Course in Rubble Construction”-
A 50-foot wall will be built along the planter beds. Community members will place stones and the final wall will stay in place for the extent of this project. A local mason will also outline the history of stonework and the basics of rubble construction.
Interface
Volunteers will be placing stones and building beds along the southern wall of the garden site. Participants will be taught a bit about setting stones and then able to set a few in the course of the wall.
Timeline
9am-1pm 2-3 people
1pm-4pm 2-3 people
“Outreach Coordinators”
These volunteers will be cruising through the farmers market inviting market attendees to come see the sites (Food Bank Garden, BUGS site). They will also have contact info and sign up sheets for interested community members.
