Event Description

The Volunteer Center of Whatcom County and Western’s Center for Service-Learning are co-hosting a Community Engagement Forum on the theme “Building Resilience through Skill-Sharing and Volunteering”.

The event will take place from 3:30-4:45 pm in the Pavilion at Maritime Heritage Park (514 W. Holly St), and is open to all. Refreshments will be provided.

The community leaders who will serve as panelists include:

Kate Foster—Learning in Community Service, WWU
Paul Gazdik—Emergency Management, City of Bellingham
Mary Keane—The Foundry Makerspace
David MacLeod—Transition Whatcom
Shannon Maris—Chuckanut Center

Panelists and the audience will engage with questions such as:

• Which ongoing skill-sharing or volunteering programs in the region would you like to see expand, and what are their most important impacts?

• Which new systems for skill-sharing and volunteering would you like to see established to meet community needs?

• In which ways does/might skill-sharing and volunteering help create a more resilient community, especially considering the wide-ranging impacts of climate change?

Please come to learn from our panelists and engage in dialogue on this important topic!

Community Engagement Forums are part of the Community Engagement Fellows program (www.cefellows.org). The mission of Community Engagement Fellows is to help higher education faculty and community-based educators in northwestern Washington nurture engaged citizens, serve the public, and improve our region and the planet.

Please send questions about the event to travis.tennessen@wwu.edu.
